Know About Chhindwara

Chhindwara is located in the valleys of Satpura Range in India. it is amidst great hill stations like Panchmari and Tamia. Chhindwara is the prime location for the Adivaasis or Gond tribes that are vanishing very fast. this place till today is a home to them and is quite dense and highly populated in the interiors.

It's a nice place..quite hilly...its considered to be one of coolest places in MP during summer...

There are lots of things to roam around. also can see the normal Indian town mixed of village people and highly educated people...

It is mainly a tribal city with lot of people from the Gondwana tribe. The main areas to visit near Chhindwara is Pachmarri which is about 125 Kms from the district and is considered to be one of the most beautiful hill stations in Madhya Pradesh.



History records the place from the time of the rule of Bhakth Bulund King, whose kingdom was spread over the Satpura range of hills and it is belived that his rule was upto the 3rd Century. One ancient plaque, belonging to "Rashtrakut" dynasty, found in "Neelkanth" village. This dynasty ruled upto the 7th Century. Then came the "Gondvana" dynasty which ruled the area with "Devgarh" as the capital. King 'Jatav' of 'Gond' community has built the Devgarh fort. Bhakth Bulund King was most powerful in the dynasty and he has adopted Muslim religion during the rule of Emperor "Aurangjeb". Later the power has changed many hands and finally 'Maratha rule' ended in 1803. On 17 September 1803, East India Company had taken over this kingdom by defeating 'Raghuji II', starting the British rule. After Independence 'Nagpur' was made the capital of Chhindwara District, and on 1st November 1956 this district was re-constituted with Chhindwara as the capital.


Chhindwara is located at [show location on an interactive map] 22.07° N 78.93° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 675 metres (2214 feet).

It has two lakes located in the middle of the town. Chhindwara is known for the richness of its flora and fauna. Hundreds of important medicinal plants are grown naturally in the forest of this district. Tamia hills and Patalkot[2] is known as a treasure of medicinal plants in Satpura plateau.



Chhindwara District has majority of tribal population. The tribal communities include Gond, Pardhan, Bharia, Korku. Hindi, Marathi, Gondi, Urdu, Korku, Musai, Parvari etc. languages/dialects are in use in the district. Majority of the tribals speak in Gondi and Hindi mixed with Marathi. Among the cultural functions/festivals in the district Pola, Bhujalia, Meghnath, Akhadi, Harijyoti etc. are famous ones. 'Gotmat Mela' of Pandhurna is unique and world renowned fair. On Shivrathri day 'Mahadev Mela' will be celebrated each year on "Choudagadh".


Hindustan Unilever Limited is a multinational company, originally from England. Earlier this company's name was Hindustan Lever Limited. Chhindwara Hindustan Unilever Limited is situated at village Lahgaduam 5 km from Chhindwara. This company has completed 75 years in 2008. There are 210 workers in Hindustan Unilever, who work in 3 shifts. The Chhindwara factory produces 3 main products: Rin washing soap, Wheel washing powder and Surf Excel washing powder. It is the only factory of Hindustan Unilever in Madhya Pradesh. In the year 2007 the production was 70,000 units


Golganj, Gandhiganj, Chotta Bazar, Shanichra Bazar and Mansarovar Complex are the main commercial centers of the city.

Hanuman temple at Nagpur road, Ram mandir at Chhota Bazar, Jain Kanch Mandir at Golganj, Shiv Mandir at Pataleshwar, Old Jama Masjid at Main Road,famous Dargaah at Satkaar chauraha, Catholic Church at Khajri Road, Sai mandir at vivekanand colony, old Gurudwara at Station Road and Nirmala Devi's birthplace at Nagpur road are religious places of the city worth seeing.

There are some big playgrounds and stadiums in the city with sports training facilities like Police Ground, Shukla Ground, Polo Ground and Main Stadium. An old and famous gymnasium (Sarvottam Health Club) is also there for fitness freaks.

Statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Fawwara Chawk, Shivaji Maharaj at ELC, Indira Gandhi at indira Chawk, Pratul Chand Dwivedi at Old Power House and BheemRao Ambedkar at Satkaar Chauraha gives an identity to these places.

The very old library of Hindi Pracharni Samiti (on Vidhya-Niketan School premises) has a collection of thousands of old and new books, latest magazines and Hindi-English newspapers.

Four Good cinema halls, the BSNL office, the New Bus Stand and Mansarovar Complex are other good places to see.
